Fit and alterations are some of the biggest challenges in clothing design and pattern drafting, but once mastered can drastically affect the perceived quality of a garment. Fit can singularly make-or-break the love of a garment, whether that is for yourself or for your customer/client. This class is focused on how to identify issues and common pattern alterations needed to achieve the intended shape and feel of a garment. In this class we will work through common fit issues, how to identify the problem, and methods for correcting the problem in your patterns. You will leave with a much better awareness of quality in fit, the language to communicate those fit challenges and how to utilize your intuition and artistic eye to make notable improvements to your work. These skills can be applied to better drafting your own patterns, working with designers and clothing vendors, or making appropriate adjustments in order to custom tailor your store-bought patterns. To get the most out of this class it is recommended that you have an understanding of how to read and work with paper patterns.
