Embroidery is an ancient textile art form used by cultures around the world to adorn their clothes, tell stories, use in ceremony, and even connect to the divine. In this course, will cover the basics of hand embroidery techniques along with some embroidery history tid bits and a helpful mindset. Whether you are an embroidery beginner or want to freshen up on your needle work skills, whether you love structured projects or just love to wing it, this class is for you!
In this workshop, taught by artist and designer Maggie Dimmick, you will learn stitches including running stitch, satin stitch, chain stitch, cross stitch, feather stitch, and french knots, just to name a few. These basic stitches are the building blocks for more complicated stitches and projects: once you learn the basics, the possibilities are endless! You will also learn key aspects of planning embroidery projects: composition, color palette & material selection, scale, and choosing which stitches to use when. This will be a space to explore your own creative voice and style in embroidery to build your own aesthetic which is truest to you. We will provide a variety of base fabrics to choose from, thread and all necessary tools, but if you have a project base fabric in mind (such as a certain fabric or garment), feel free to bring it along. Otherwise, come as you are!
Maggie Dimmick a Minneapolis-based artist, textile designer, and founder of Ethel Studio, a zero-waste textile studio on a mission to eliminate textile waste and promote positive well-being. She was trained in fashion design at Cornell University, after which she worked in textile design & research and color management for New York fashion brands including Eileen Fisher. She has a serious fabric scrap obsession and is convinced that patchwork will be the new plaid. She is equally passionate about inspiring others to incorporate waste-eliminating measures in their designs as well.
